The about on-again, off-again iPhone 12 rumor appears to be back on. After some industry watchers and leakers dismissed the possibility of the iPhone 12 Pro getting a 120Hz display, a new feature in the iOS 14 beta teases that a ProMotion display may be happening later on all.

Similar to the Samsung Galaxy Notation 20 Ultra, the iPhone 12'southward 120Hz mode would enable smoother scrolling and animations. But Apple tree's implementation would accept a drawback compared to Samsung's tech.

The Twitter user @abjornx spotted an selection to limit the frame rate on his iPhone 11 Pro within iOS 14 Beta five, which was picked upwards by iAppleTimes. The Limit Frame Rate option in iOS says "Sets the maximum frame charge per unit of the display to sixty frames per second."

Considering today's iPhones are already limited to 60Hz, why would Apple include this pick in iOS xiv unless information technology had plans to offering at least ane iPhone 12 model with a 120Hz display?

Every bit reported by PhoneArena, display analyst Ross Young has weighed in, seeming to dorsum the idea of a 120Hz display on the iPhone 12 while also reinforcing a major caveat.

Young says that this build of iOS xiv "only allows you lot to choose between 60Hz and something higher (120Hz)." So the iPhone 12 would not go the adaptive refresh charge per unit in the Galaxy Annotation twenty Ultra, whose LTPO technology allows the panel to dial the Hz upward or down depending on the content that's on screen.

We've heard previous reports pointing to the ProMotion display working fine on the larger 6.7-inch Phone 12 Pro Max but having issues on the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro. Merely we've also heard that Apple tree may not include a 120Hz panel at all, with Ross Immature saying in early Baronial that in that location would be "no 120Hz hardware on new iPhones."

And so these latest developments but misfile matters further. The Galaxy Annotation 20 Ultra isn't the but phone with a 120Hz display. Other Android flagships, such as the OnePlus viii Pro, characteristic a 120Hz panel, and the Asus ROG Telephone three has an fifty-fifty smoother 140Hz display.

The iPhone 12 Pro models volition reportedly have other features to stand out versus the regular iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max, including a telephoto lens and a LiDAR sensor for improved photography and ameliorate performance in iPhone AR apps. Only a 120Hz brandish would go a long way towards amend justifying the expected premium for the iPhone 12 Pro devices.
